What these figures mean
- Federal money. Federal awards whose work was listed in this county for fiscal year 2025.
- Weather alerts. Flood, wind, winter storm, and similar warnings for Maine from the weather service. Zero means none were in effect when we last checked.
- Density. People divided by land square miles. Downtown Portland is dense; an unorganized township is not.
- Land. Square miles of land, from the Census Gazetteer. Water is counted separately.
- Income. American Community Survey 5-year estimate. Half of households earn more, half earn less.
- EPA sites. Sites EPA tracks for air, water, or hazardous waste rules. A count is not a violation score.
- Climate reporters. Factories, power plants, and landfills large enough that EPA makes them report greenhouse gases each year. Not every shop or farm — only the big ones. Latest complete year is 2023.
- Chemical reporters. Workplaces that use certain chemicals and file a yearly Toxics Release Inventory form. A count is not the same as “this county is dirty.” It means those sites exist and have not been marked closed.
- Housing. Houses, apartments, and other units, occupied or empty. ACS 5-year.
- Median age. Half the people are older than this age, half younger. ACS 5-year.
